Death Race 2050 Wasn't ... [Reaction]

G.J. Echternkamp directed Death Race 2050, a 2017 American political satire action film starring Manu Bennett, Marci Miller, and Malcolm McDowell. It's a follow-up to 1975's Death Race 2000. Roger Corman produced both films, which he characterized as "a car-racing picture with some first post black humor."

Death Race 2050's plot?

This is in the year 2050. In the United Corporations of America, which has a problem with overpopulation and an unemployment rate of 99.993 percent, the Death Race serves the dual purpose of providing entertainment and controlling the population. The next round of the Death Race is taking place from Old New York to New Los Angeles, and Frankenstein is the defending champion. Competing against Frankenstein are a genetically modified athlete named Jed Perfectus, a hip-hop star named Minerva Jefferson, a female cultist named Tammy the Terrorist, and a self-driving automobile named ABE that is wicked, black, and artificially intelligent. Each participant in the race is given a proxy, who is a broadcaster who brings the audience into the action via the use of virtual reality. Annie Sullivan, who acts as Frankenstein's surrogate, is instantly offensive to him, and he dismisses both her efforts to interview him and her recommendations that he should let his opponents pass him by.

As the racers make their way along the East Coast, renegades headed by an ex-network producer named Alexis Hamilton are setting up ambushes all throughout the region. As a result of Tammy and Minerva stealing cult members from one another for kills, a violent rivalry develops between the two of them. After falling victim to a trap set by the rebels, ABE has a glitch that causes it to murder its proxy and then give up the pursuit of figuring out its true purpose in life. At the first checkpoint, Hamilton gives Annie, who it turns out is her spy, the order to murder Frankenstein. Annie obeys. Her effort to woo him is fruitless since he is solely focused on achieving victory in the competition. In another part of his speech, the Chairman says that Frankenstein's continued existence has turned him into a burden for the company, while Perfectus will urge his dedicated supporters to die at his hands.

Day two of the marathon passes through the gun-toting heartland. Tammy's suicide bomber kills Minerva's proxy, Chi Wapp. Frankenstein's automobile gets stranded in a cornfield after taking a shortcut. Frankenstein defends against Resistance ninjas while Annie walks off. Annie tells Frankenstein she's a rebel at the second checkpoint. Frankenstein condemns both the rebels and the government, saying he simply wants to win. Minerva tells Annie at a pub that she's an academic who plays a hip-hop stereotype to live. Annie protects Frankenstein from Perfectus, who's envious of his notoriety and sex appeal. Meanwhile, Hamilton and the Chairman are collaborating.

During the third day of the race, the government creates "authorized" routes to keep the drivers safe from the Resistance's ambush attempts. Annie lends a hand to Frankenstein, whose right arm was broken during the battle with Perfectus. To avert Tammy's suicidal proxy, Minerva follows her and jumps over a precipice. The ABE returns and runs Tammy into the wall, where she self-destructs, killing her and Minerva in the process. Hamilton and her rebels are wiped out by Frankenstein and Annie as Perfectus takes a shortcut to the finish line. When Perfectus loses control of his automobile, he crashes into the VR control booth, which is where the action takes place. To his admirers, Frankenstein sends a message stating that the Chairman himself is worth 1,000 points before reaching the finish line. After murdering the Chairman, Frankenstein invites the viewers to leave their virtual world behind and participate in their own Death Race, to the pleasure of the crowd. From afar, Frankenstein and Annie see a nation descending into anarchy and recommend that it should be repopulated after the turbulence has subsided.

In what way was Death Race 2050 created?

Corman got the idea for a sequel to the first movie when an Italian reporter told him that The Hunger Games and Death Race 2000 had a lot in common. Corman talked to Universal Pictures, which made the modern remake (which Corman thought got rid of too much of the original's political commentary), about putting back the original's dark satire. Corman said, "You did a good job, but you took out the killing of pedestrians and the themes of a broken society."

Filming started in Corman's late 80s, amid the 2016 presidential election. It features the UCA Chairman. Corman told an interviewer, "The president's hairstyle could be similar to Trump's, but I don't want to get into that because Trump will come and go and the film will remain."

Did everyone like seeing Death Race 2050?

"For a movie about the Death Race coming to an end, there are a lot of Death Races in the movie. It's Death Race 2050, a movie made by Roger Corman. It comes after the Death Race trilogy with Jason Statham in the late 2000s and early 2010. As good as they were, they had almost nothing to do with the original Death Race 2000 from the 1970s. With a three-day race across a dystopian America, pedestrian deaths earn points for people with over-the-top personalities who kill people. ...but this time, there's a 50 in front of it." - Decker Shado

There are three behind-the-scenes films included with the DVD and Blu-ray release in the United States: The Making of 2050, The Look of 2050, and Cars! Cars. Cars. Cars. On the 20th of March, 2017, it was made available in the UK.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an 88% approval rating, based on eight reviews with an average rating of 6.8/10 as of June 2020.

Chris Alexander described the picture as "loud, shrill, spastic, sadistic, stylish, slipshod, stupid and smart in equal measures." in an article for ComingSoon.net. "All very clunky, ramshackle, and kitschy," remarked Scott Weinberg in his Nerdist review, "but that's just part of the'shaggy dog' charm of the production." "it’s got enough blood, guts, simplistic political commentary, scenery chewing and terrible special effects for it to become a cult classic." Screen Anarchy's Zavala wrote.
